The Myth of Levelling Up: Why You Don’t Need the “High-Level Coach” Just Yet

Over the last eight years, I’ve worked with over 160 entrepreneurs. That’s a lot of brainstorming sessions, strategy pivots, and occasionally, some serious facepalming. 

One thing I’ve noticed is a recurring theme: so many of these well-meaning business owners had dropped a small fortune on coaching programs or masterminds that, well, didn’t deliver the goods.

When we dug into the details, a clear pattern emerged. Most of them knew deep down that these investments weren’t the right move, but they were sold on the tantalizing idea of learning from someone who was “where they wanted to be.” You know the pitch: “I’ve cracked the code, and now you can too!”

Sounds great, right? Until you realize the code they cracked wasn’t for running a business like yours, it was for selling high-ticket coaching to other hopeful entrepreneurs.

The “High-Level” Coaching Illusion

Let’s get one thing straight: learning from people ahead of you in the game isn’t inherently bad advice. But here’s the rub: the health and wellness entrepreneurs I worked with often hired ex-health coaches turned business coaches who promised six and seven figure results… if you just followed their “proven formula.”

One small problem: their “proven formula” wasn’t for selling health and wellness services. It was for selling high-ticket coaching. And many of these folks hadn’t even been particularly successful at selling health services before they made the pivot.

Translation? 

They weren’t so much leading you up the ladder as they were selling you the ladder itself. And by the time you realized it was missing a few rungs, you were already out five figures.

The Truth About Your Entrepreneurial Journey

Here’s the deal, my friend: your entrepreneurial path isn’t a high-speed elevator to success. It’s more like an obstacle course designed by someone who just discovered caffeine. Twists, turns, detours, you’re going to encounter all of them.

Patience, consistency, and a healthy dose of failing forward are your real cheat codes. Anyone who tells you otherwise? They’re probably trying to sell you something.

The Rules for Smarter Coaching Decisions

If you’re feeling tempted by the siren song of high-level coaching programs, here’s my two cents:

1. If You’re Under $100K, Skip the “Level Up” Coach
   Your problem isn’t that you need a guru on a pedestal. You likely need a clearer business model, more patience, and some honest work on those pesky self-limiting beliefs.

2. Invest Smartly
   Coaching is an investment, yes. But dropping 20% of your revenue on it? That’s not a business move: it’s financial self-sabotage.

Trust Your Gut

Those polished Instagram ads and magnetic sales pitches? They’re designed to make you second-guess yourself. But here’s the thing: that little voice in the back of your head? The one whispering, “This doesn’t feel right…” listen to it. It’s probably saving you thousands of dollars.

Instead of chasing shortcuts, start taking consistent action. Get a little support and accountability from a coach who meets you where you are. Then roll up your sleeves and do the thing.

Spoiler alert: the market will teach you more about your business than any high-level coach ever could.
